linek is a program which accepts input in Nudi/KGP/K.P.Rao format and converts the same to equivalent Kannada characters. The output can then be pasted to any of the office suites or editor of your choice.

The program can also be used to typeset vedic hymns provided one has Nudi Vedic font installed on their systems.

For the fonts to be visible properly on your system, you should have the Nudi and/or Baraha fonts available on your system.

Note: linek will not provide you a method to view Kannada characters as you type.

This program is licensed under GNU General Public License version 2 or later.

Subject: To get Linek-web working on your Debian Etch system

   Hi,

The following are the steps to get Linek web working on your Debian Etch

   1. Download the Nudi fonts and extract them somewhere. -
      http://mylug.org/linek/nudi-fonts.zip
   2. Copy the nudi fonts to /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-kannada-fonts/
      (Make sure you're root)
   3. Run the command fc-cache (as root)
   4. Log out and login into X
   5. Install the following packages by using synaptic or aptitude
          libapache2-mod-php5
          apache2-mpm-prefork
          php5-common
   6. Run the following command:
          a2enmod php5
   7. Download the linek-web source and extract it to the webroot (/var/www)
       Eg. /var/www/linek
   8. Restart apache - /etc/init.d/apache2 restart (as root)
   9. Open your browser and point your URL bar to load
      http://localhost/linek
   10. Start typing using Nudi keymap.
   11. If you find some weird characters in the output, add the following to
a file named .htaccess and copy it to /var/www/linek/.htaccess
          AddDefaultCharset ISO-8859-1

   That's it.

   Regards,

   shashi

linek version 0.6 is released which supports output in utf-8 format. As before, the input method is almost Nudi/KGP/KP Rao. But, due to some limitations of the rendering, certain combinations will not work (in unicode mode).

Note

  • Absence of arkavottu by way of typing 'F'.
  • Vedic notations will not work.
  • Characters with nukta are not rendered correctly.
  • There might be a few more :-(
